    Culture Your Kids For Cheap

Exposing your kids to cultural activities, such as museums, art galleries, plays and gardens helps them develop intellectually. While these activities can be expensive here are some ideas to broaden their horizons without breaking your budget.

    • Look for plays and concerts at local community theaters. Shows running at small, local theaters are always less expensive than those running at larger performance arts centers and the quality of the performances are still good. Also, if your child is enjoys what they see, local theaters are always looking for volunteers to help with costuming, set design, even being on stage, so it’s a great way to get your child involved for free.
    • Check local museums for children days. Many museums will have days or times set aside for families and they are generally free or reduced admission. Keep in mind, to leave while your child is still enjoying themselves so that they will be anxious to come back. Keeping them there until they are bored will them with a negative perception.
    • Look for new art galleries opening up. New galleries usually have at least one open showing of their artwork. Sometimes snacks are even provided at these events. Look for them after work or on the weekends.
    • Go online. Type in the URL yourcity.org to find out about upcoming events in your area. Most often, city sponsored events are free or small charge to the public and include things such as art walks, symphonies in the park, craft days, etc.

Don’t forget to visit Valpak.com Entertainment and Travel section for specific savings on activities with your children.

Cut Back on Your Grocery Bills

Here are some tips to save time and money at the grocery store without sacrificing health.

    • Shop early and alone. When you shop earlier in the day, you get through the store faster and spend less. Also, when you shop alone you don’t have the "little helpers" that boost your bill.
    • Set your shopping mood. You are more likely to reach for expensive snack foods if you’re tired or angry.
    • Grocery stores are for groceries. Items such as painkillers, toothpaste and contact lens solution tend to be more expensive at grocery stores.
    • Stick to the edges. Generally, healthy, less processed foods, such as dairy, fruits and meats are around the edges of the store. The main areas where you are walking tend to be scattered with high priced items so avoid such areas if possible.
    • Give the shelves the once-over. Items the grocery stores most want to sell (usually the high priced brand named items) are on the shelves between knee and shoulder height. You can save up to 40% by buying house or generic brands.
